A battery that appears dead is not always a failed battery. Cables wear out, ports collect lint, threaded chargers lose contact, and lithium batteries can temporarily refuse charging when they are too hot or too cold. Work through these checks in order so you change one variable at a time.
1. Let the battery return to room temperature
Disconnect the device and place it on a dry, non-flammable surface. If it was just used, left in a vehicle, or brought in from cold weather, let it return to room temperature before charging. Battery protection circuits may interrupt charging outside their safe temperature range.
Do not put the device on a heater, in direct sun, in a freezer, or under running water. If the enclosure is swollen, split, leaking, or too hot to touch comfortably, do not reconnect it.
2. Inspect the cable and power source
Check the cable ends for bent metal, fraying, or looseness. Test with a second known-good cable of the same type. Then try a standard USB power source that matches the manufacturer's guidance. A laptop port can help isolate whether a wall adapter is the issue, but the correct source depends on the model.
A connector fitting physically does not prove the charger is suitable. Avoid unknown fast-charging bricks and multiport adapters that behave unpredictably. Never force a USB-C or micro-USB plug into a misaligned port.
3. Clean the charge port carefully
Turn the battery off and disconnect it. Look into the port under good light. Pocket lint can prevent a plug from seating completely. Use dry air or a soft, non-metallic brush; do not insert pins, knives, or wet swabs into the port. A centre tongue that is bent, loose, or discoloured requires service.
Reconnect the cable straight. If charging starts only when the plug is held at an angle, stop using the port. Intermittent pressure can worsen a broken solder joint and create heat.
4. For threaded chargers, clean both contacts
Some pen batteries use a screw-on USB charger instead of a built-in port. Residue on the battery and charger contacts can make the charger light stay green even though the cell is empty. Wipe both contact surfaces with a dry cotton swab and reconnect until gently snug.
Do not overtighten the charger. Excess pressure can push the centre contact or damage threading. Use only the charger specified for that battery; similar-looking threaded chargers may deliver different voltage.
5. Read the indicator correctly
Check the manual for the normal sequence. Depending on the model, red may mean charging and green may mean complete; a pulsing battery icon may replace coloured lights. If the indicator never appears, leave the device connected only for the manual's normal observation period, then disconnect and continue troubleshooting.

6. Reset the attached-part variable
Remove the cartridge, coil, or atomizer before another charging test when the manual allows it. A shorted attachment can make the device appear unresponsive. Once the battery is charged, test it first without a visibly leaking or damaged cartridge.
If the battery charges normally after the attachment is removed, inspect the connection and follow the blink-code guide. Replacing a faulty cartridge or coil is safer and less expensive than repeatedly forcing the battery through a protection state.
7. Consider battery age and storage
Rechargeable cells lose capacity with cycles and time. A battery that reaches “full” quickly and empties immediately may have reached end of life even though the charger works. Long-term storage while completely empty can also make recovery unreliable.
If the battery is new and covered by warranty, document the cable, power source, light pattern, and model before contacting support. If it is older, physically worn, or has a loose port, replace the complete battery rather than attempting to open or repair the sealed enclosure. What not to do
Do not open the battery, bridge contacts with metal, charge overnight unattended, use a damaged cable, or continue charging a hot or swollen device. Do not follow videos that suggest prying up a 510 centre pin; that can damage insulation and create a short.
The useful final test is simple: a room-temperature battery, clean undamaged port, known-good correct cable, appropriate power source, and no suspect attachment. If that combination produces no indicator or usable charge, the battery needs warranty assessment or replacement.
